cardiology

Cardiology deals with heart diseases in animals. Heart diseases appear not only in dogs and cats but also in small pets (ferrets, rabbits etc.). All these animals can be systematically examined for the purpose of preparing a suitable therapy plan.
There are many different types of heart disease: congenital, which is present already in the young animal at birth (e.g. persistent ductus arteriosus Botalli, aortic stenosis), or acquired, which develop in the course of life (e.g. valve endocardiosis, cardiomyopathies); diseases of specific valves (e.g. mitral valve endocardiosis), of heart musculature (e.g. hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in cats) or of the cardiac impulse-conducting and conduit system (specific forms of arrhythmia); primary, whose cause is to be sought in the heart itself, and secondary, which occur in the course of other diseases (e.g. ventricular tachyarrhythmias in case of gastric torsions). Such a targeted therapy certainly requires an exact diagnosis of the present set of problems.

Many heart diseases appear in specific breeds on frequent and hereditary basis (e. g. aortic stenosis in boxers, dilated cardiomyopathy in dobermanns). Early detection of these diseases is very important from the breeder’s point of view, as well as from the therapeutic points of view, and it is already partially required by some breeding associations.

The Veterinary Clinic Stuttgart for the diagnostics of heart diseases not only has specialist knowledge, but also the required equipment (laboratory, X-ray, ECG, long-term ECG, state-of-the-art ultrasound scanner with color, PW and CW Doppler). Generally speaking, tests can and must be performed on conscious patients. The results are saved digitally and therefore they are available anytime for the comparison during control examinations.

The therapy is oriented toward the results of heart diagnostics and generally be performed on an outpatient basis. Cardiological emergencies can be admitted anytime on a stationary basis. Available for this purpose are 24-hour care facilities, specialist knowledge of intensive care and an intensive care unit with oxygen supply.
