Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is a specific and sophisticated type of wound treatment in cases of

  • large, ulcerated skin infections (even in cases of multiresistant germs)
  • chronic ulcerations with wound healing deficiencies
  • acute large lesions, where a classical surgical intervention is impossible

Wound healing and cleaning gets improved by the occlusion of the lesion with a simultaneous drainage for wound secretion, infectious material and blood, where the negative pressure is accomplished via a constant suction by a mobile pumping system. Thus, an anti-infective effect can be achieved. This mobile pumping System the controlled negative pressure can be localized and targeted at the precise wound area, which induces and promotes the healing process, as the negative pressure eliminates different proteolytic enzymes such as metallo-proteases, which otherwise might retard the cure. At the same time the blood circulation is improved, as the vascularization of the affected tissue is supported. Hence, Granulation tissue can rapidly grow over the lesion area and a fast and clean wound healing can be accomplished.

Multiple publications in human as well as veterinary medicine acknowledge the improved anti-infective and wound healing capabilities of negative pressure wound therapy, even if it is a sophisticated and elaborate procedure. Example giving: As the continuity of the negative pressure has to be secured, it is unfortunately not possible to conduct NPWT ambulatory, but this therapy can only be applied as inpatient treatment.
